Attendance/Tardy Policy:
Each student is responsible for attending all classes. Research shows that good attendance increases the opportunity for students to achieve academically, participate in extracurricular activities, and improve self-esteem.
Attendance Requirement:
Arizona State Law (A.R.S. 15-803) requires that children of certain ages must attend school during the hours school is in session. Parents/Guardians are responsible for ensuring their children attend school every day.
A student is “habitually truant” if he/she has:
⚫ Five or more unexcused absences or
⚫ Is absent more than 18 days (excused and unexcused) of the required number of days per year.
Tardy Policy: The definition: Tardy—adjective 1. late; behind in time, not on time 2. Moving or acting slowly; sluggish 3. Delaying through reluctance |
The definition: Tardy—affected 1. late; **not in the assigned seat in the appropriate classroom 2. A choice one makes to be late |
**Being in the hallways, building, restroom, and other areas are not considered being on time.
***Tardies: Campus doors open at 7:30 am. Students will be released to go to class about five minutes before the start of the day. School begins 7:55am. All students must be in their classroom seat at that time.
Attendance will be taken within the first five minutes of class. A student isconsidered tardy if not in his/her seat at the beginning of the school day.
Students more than 20 minutes late to a class will be considered truant and subject to disciplinary action.
The following are the consequences for tardies (cumulative per quarter):
Elementary(K-5)
1stand 2ndtardy: Warning
3rdtardy:Letter sent home
4thtardy:2 hours of Detention and parent/guardian contact
5thtardy:3 hours of Detention and put on a Tardiness Contract
6thtardy:3 hours of Detention and Required Parent/Guardian Conference (RPC)
7thtardy:Suspension (in-school or out of school)
Middle School (Grades 6-8)
1stand 2ndtardy: Warning
3rdtardy:Letter sent home
4thtardy:2 hours of Detention and parent/guardian contact
5thtardy:3 hours of Detention and put on a Tardiness Contract
6thtardy:4 hours of Detention and Required Parent/Guardian Conference (RPC)
7thtardy:Suspension (in-school or out of school)
8 or more tardies will be deemed a “Habitual Tardy Problem” and additional
disciplinary actions will be taken.
*** Pursuant A.R.S. 15-803. School attendance; exemptions; definitions
School officials retain the right to determine the status of the tardy. Excused tardies are clearly defined. Students with excused tardies are granted full make-up privileges. Examples of excused tardies include:
- • Medical, dental, and other health appointments (note from health appointment is required)
- • Car accident (Police report is required)
Grading Policy:
Our goal is to ensure parents are constantly informed of their student’s academic performance in school. Progress reports will be sent home every 5 weeks, and report cards will be sent home every 10 weeks. At the end of each semester, quarter grades will be averaged to create a semester grade in each class. The grading scale is as follows:
90-100% A
80-89% B
70-79% C
60-69% D
59%-below F
Report cards will be sent home at the end of each quarter. The quarter end dates are 10/04/2019, 12/20/2019, 3/13/2020, and 6/04/2020. Parents are encouraged to contact the school any time they have questions following the reports at the end of each quarter.
Progress reports will be sent home halfway through each quarter.
*Student will not receive a grade higher than 100%.
Description of Grading Practices:
Each assignment will have a percentage value and then will be further weighted based on the category in which it falls:
Formal Assessments (Breakdown is stated below) 60% Tests, Quizzes and Performances 60%
Informal Assessments (Breakdown is stated below) 40%
Homework, Classwork, Participation, Labs and/or projects 40%
*Semester grades will be weighted evenly (50/50). Final exam and/or benchmarks growth and goal progress will be included in the formal assessments’ category.
Incompletes are only for tests, quizzes, etc., and are NOT for homework.
- • Participation criteria:
Routinely provides useful ideas when participating in the classroom. A definite leader who contributes a lot of effort and who makes class discussions better.
Student is always respectful of his or her self, others, and teacher, has a positive attitude, and does not criticize anyone else’s ideas or work. Students feel safe participating in her presence.
Always comes to class on time, follows all classroom procedures, brings needed materials to class and is always in her seat ready to work before the bell rings. Consistently stays focused on in-class work and what needs to be done. Self-directed and highly motivated.
Provides work of the highest quality that reflects the student’s best efforts.
Student is awake and engaged in class daily. Student shows no disruptive behavior.
- Make-up Work Practice:
Homework is an essential part of the curriculum. Some courses, mathematics for example, may require daily assignments to be worked on outside the allotted class time. No creditwill be given on make-up work to any student who has an unexcused absence.
For an excused absence studentisgiven full make up privileges. Student will have the amount of time absent to make up the work. Any make-up assignments not due to an absence are at the teacher’s discretion. No make-up work will be accepted after the lastday of each quarter.
Students that choose not to complete their homework assignments can be required to attend atutoringsession at the teacher’s discretion to make up assignments not turned in. Students are required to make-up exams by the end of the appropriate grading period.
- o Review assignment sheet, if available
- o Review class website, if available
- o Email teacher
- o Arrange a “study buddy” in each class
- o Attend Friday tutoring session
- o Make arrangements to make-up work and/or exams
When students are absent, please follow these suggestions:
- • Redos/Retakes Practice: o Benchmarks – either provided by AMS or created by the teachers ▪ No retakes are allowed
- o Tests and Quizzes – only applies to written tests and quizzes ▪ Retakes must happen by teacher appointment (complete within 1 week)
- ▪ Any student may retake a test or a quiz, regardless of the grade they originally received
- ▪ Students must provide proof of preparation (specific details will be supplied by the teacher)
-
- • Late Work Practice: o Classwork/Homework grading scale ▪ On time – full points
- ▪ One day late – half points
- ▪ More than one day late – no credit, must add comments ▪ If a student receives a better grade on the retake than on the original assessment, the original grade will be replaced with the
- new grade. If a student receives a lower grade on the retake than on the original, use the original test score.
- o Projects ▪ Retakes/redos are not permitted
- o Practicum (arts performances, labs, etc.) ▪ Retakes, redos, or makeups are not permitted
- o Homework/Classwork (assignments) ▪ Redos are not permitted
- Extra Credit Practice:
- May be given at the teacher’s discretion only if the student has completed all required work. ▪ Teacher may add extra credit questions to a test, homework, classwork, etc.
- Teacher may allow students to complete extra credit outside of the norm, however it will count towards your participation grade. For example, math teacher offers students to complete a math practice packet for extra credit. This will be recorded only in the participation category.
Class Dojo
Our schools are participants in a behavior-based website called Class Dojo. Every day you can see how your child is progressing in class. I and other teachers will be awarding points for good behavior and for being on task. Just as I and other teachers will be awarding for good behavior. My philosophy is to focus more on the positive and to always find positive in every negative. Class Dojo also has some other neat features such as messaging capabilities. I will be able to message you throughout the day when I have some free time to answer any questions you may have. To receive messages and view your child’s behavior you will need to download Class Dojo onto your smart phone, tablet, laptop or desktop. I have provided the link for your convenience: https://www.classdojo.com
