top 10 4C and 4D here's your weekly read aloud we were reading from The Story of Harriet Tubman Freedom Train by Dorothy Sterling okay that's what it looks like it's called Freedom Train we were in chapter 1 and it continues but there had been days of no work at all when she waited in the Creek Hunting for crabs or followed daddy Ben's crew to the woods once one wonderful time she sailed all the way up the bay to Baltimore with daddy been to deliver a load of logs to the shipyard then she had seen a city but you never should never dream. rows and rows of houses with white stone step and cobblestone streets and a great bridge across the river it was after the trip to Baltimore that Master has spoken to her mother what is churro on the boat he said to Old R it seems little and skinny but she'll fill out can't rightly keep track of the ages of all the black babies around here registering the Colts and calves enough trouble he'd laugh but she looks old enough to be of some use the next day Miss Sarah came to the cabin with a new cotton shift to replace the torn flour sack which was Harriet's only clothing when she had dressed Miss Sarah took her to the carriage for a drive to Bucktown before Harry and realized what was happening she found herself at the home of James Cook whose wife was a weaver after mrs. cook had taught you to weave has taught you to weave you can come back home and work on our lose Miss Sarah said when she left but mine now you better be a good girl desperately lonely for old red and daddy Ben and her brothers and sister. Tried hard to be good but nothing seemed to go right at the Kooks by the time she had scrubbed floors in town about to wash her stubby fingers or too tired to follow her mistress's instructions on the loom stupid girl misses cook kept telling her stupid girl is cook agreed mr. cook agreed when impatient with her awkwardness his wife turn Harriet over to him for outdoor chores then came the day when Harriet fell sick there were bumps all over her and her head ain't paying no attention to her complaints mr. Cooper took her with him to the marshes to watch his muskrat traps she stumbled along non hummus hummus of swamp Grass Grass barely able to see for the pain in her head finally she fell in the low water and could not get up that was all she remembered until she found herself at home again with Old Rip putting wet leaves on her burning skin it's all right honey her mother comforted her Mr cook brought you back yesterday said you weren't worth the song to season your food you've got the measles mistress promised I can take care of you until you're well again when the last measles spot had disappeared Miss are called her to the big house you're going to work here now she told her and this time No Nonsense No Nonsense. Brewed it means washing and sweeping and always the baby crying and never a friendly word sometimes I think I can't stand it no longer no-nonsense baby she told him fiercely hear that now no-nonsense as her voice sounded in the empty room the baby's head rolled for his eyes and mouth open wide before he could get out his cry Harriet tried to quiet him with a song to reduce and Jubal Joe will and you were want YouTube did you go down to her all around the town her voice rang out firmly and sweetly but the baby refuse to be comforted the louder he cried the faster Harriet rocked and the more vigorously she sang systeme land give me the husk bake the cake and give me the crust fry the pork and give me the skin asked me I'm coming again Juber Juber jewelry downstairs the front door slam closed and macera's footsteps echoed in the hall wildly rocked and wildly the baby cried now I'm going to catch it she told the baby trouble with both of us is that we're hungry cheer your mommy comes to feed you but that ain't going to help me how much mistress burst into the room and me the child she ordered why did you let him cry you know what the doctor said Harry his eyelids droop to hide her Bright Eyes her lips protruded at her face took on a sullen vacant expression which had not been there a moment before she struggled to get up but the baby too heavy for her as mister took him from her arms she automatically died the blow which she knew would come only then did she attempt to speak in her own defense baby slept all morning she butter only wait just now he was hungry ignoring her explanation Miss Sarah sent her to the kitchen she helped cook get ready for lunch and then followed Fred Butler of the big house when he carried the steaming plaid did the dining table during the meal she stood next to Miss Sarah fetching salt and butter and running to the table when something more was needed the smell of the food made Harry Stossel quiver she had breakfasted on hoecake browned in the kitchen fireplace for lunch if there was time she would be given hoecake again for supper salt pork she was ever casting Lee hungry Everlasting was sick of the cornmeal and pork cornmeal and pork which was her daily ration there were nights when she dreamed of good things to eat a platters chicken and brown gravy a frosted cakes in mounds of candy her eyes fastened on the silver sugar bowl Miss at Mistresses elbow she stared at the bowl fascinated while master and mistress in gay in an angry argument slowly she moved toward it's scarcely hearing the shouted words now her fingers were only inches from the precious lump now they were dipping into the bowl before they could pick up the sugar Misty returned. She screamed this time she would not be satisfied with a careless cuff make the little slaves mind you or flawed make the loose waves mind you or flog them she always did pushing back her chair she strolled to the fireplace where are we I'd whip hung next to the mantelpiece without thinking of what she was doing. Made for the door 3 jumps and she was down the steps and out of the house up the road she flew listening anxious for the sound of pursuers faster and faster she ran past the overseer's house passed a slave cabins never daring to stop always behind her where the footsteps of Master and the shouted cause of Miss Tara finally when it seemed as if there was no breath left in her body she came to the pig pen there was an old style there an eighth of the pigs unable to climb the fence Regal through the bars at threw herself onto the muddy ground as she lay there with the sound note nosing in her face she can hear master and mistress on the road ain't really calling her name until it was dark didn't dare to move then she crawl to the trough where the pigs food was placed and fought with the little pigs for a sheriff potato peelings and scraps of me fearful of the South who kept pushing her away you made a bed of Muddy straw for herself in the far corner of the 10 hungry cold and miserable she finally fell asleep all that night and all the next day. Hit in the big kid afraid of the South more afraid of Miss Sarah when the pig slept she scraped the chocolate or food when they woke she rolled back to her straw bed after dark Shield awake staring at the cold Bright Light of the stars and wondering what she should do a roll of stars pointed to one which herreid knew each night when the other stars moved across sky is steady procession Herring star Stood Still winter and summer at Dusk and Dawn it was always in the same place to her it seemed as if the whole Sky revolved around it watching it you remember talk she had overheard about the free land to which this star could lead for the first time since she had to run away she began to cry as her body shook with sobs she fell. show hand on her shoulder hurt a soft voice close to her ear Harriet The Voice whispered is me daddy been don't cry honey I've been looking for you since yesterday afternoon ever since Fred told me what happened strong alarms lifted the shaking child tenderly been wrapped his ragged cotton shirt around her bare shoulders you shouldn't have done it he softly reproached her you got yourself a peck of trouble mom and I will do my best to get you out of it but you know we can't help much. Was quiet content to lie back in her father's eyes if you want his warm body close to hers for the moment she felt safe then as he lifted her over the bars of the pain taking her from the pigs world to the world of people again questions for him daddy Ben what do they call that star the one that never moves she pointed with her finger then been his head and kissed her for it that's the north star child the best Star there is but you must be thinking about that not yet current guys that was our next chapter of the story Harriet Tubman Freedom Trail Freedom Train by Dorothy Sterling we will have more later all right talk to you soon bye bye
