good morning 5 a.m. alright so today we are going to be doing compare and contrast in literature and compare and contrast and informational text I have the highest of faith in you guys at you guy actually already really good at this we are going to go over some terms and definitions that maybe we haven't gone over in the past before remember going to your goal is 80% or higher if you already passed it in for higher score if you have a hundred try for another a hundred k. you're doing something in your brain is working I'm so the first thing we want to do is remember what compare and contrast means right I hate the fact that I say right all the time it's like this weird habit I have now from doing this right so compare things to find similarities in contrast means to find differences and then we want to talk about with literature means cuz it's going to be really confusing but the literature refers to any written work that is not considered informational text okay so just know that there's a difference between literature and informational text and what informational text I don't mean that literature can't be real life example nonfiction like autobiography their biographies those are still considered literature they wouldn't be considered informational information with something that gives you you know facts and information without really telling a story it's more like just there to provide you so anytime you would read an article that provides information news articles are informational text you know anything that find about science or history those are all informational text Kay where is if you find stories about somebody or their life or things that are fake that's all literature so we're going to talk about the different ways that you can compare and contrast litter we're going to talk about scope treatment organization story variance and theme these are the five things for right now in the fifth grade that you would look at to use to compare and contrast in literature let's start with what Weatherford part of the word scope before it right in like a word like telescope because scope means the range of observation the extent of a timeframe is it you want to think of it like right you know you look at through a telescope with my pen right there we go so you know when you look through a telescope your scope is everything that you can actually see okay so you want to think of scope is anything that you can actually observe I can we talk about scope in literature what we mean is like how much of the information we have about the entire Earth right now so some examples of this would be gray one Harry Potter book will have a smaller scope in the whole series Strike Zone the whole entire Harry Potter series is going to have a very large scope cuz we get a lot of information we get a larger glance at the World of Harry Potter wears one Harry Potter book is going to have a much smaller so so. Compare and contrast these and literature you would talk about the scope how much you know how much information is missing based on the Limited provided to you we're going to talk about treatment and treatment is a manner of treating atopic and I know I tell you guys a million times and not to use the words in your definitions but in this case that's just what we're going to have to do okay so when we talk about treating we mean like how is the author talking about the topic so like is it serious is itsfunneh for example if you were to talk about death versus a birthday party you're going to talk about those you're going to treat those two different ways red death would be a serious topic need serious treatment whereas a birthday party would need happier treatment my dream is to give it like how you treat your friends right we're going to treat somebody you like much better than you're going to treat somebody you don't like normally that's how people tend to behave so that's all that treatment is how we're addressing or approaching a topic are we being serious about it is it funny cuz it's something white inside go with something dark and mysterious as what treatment is make sure to look at organization and this is the structure order of the text you guys are actually already really good at this because we made those entire text structure text structure obviously cannot talk this morning and drink my coffee yet structure order is stuff like you know cause and effect problem solution anything that we put down in those little books that we made Messi today all right so you can buy scope how much you can see treatment how you treat something whether it serious or not organization or how its setup and then story variant as well what story variants are are the small details in a text which change meaning or offer new information and the way you would have a good story variance it's basically a story very is where you take another story and you rewrite it a little bit differently so basically every Disney movie is a story. Caleb The Lion King is it really just Hamlet Frozen is really just an old fairy tale called The Snow Queen and then The Little Mermaid actually is a variant that's much nicer than the original because the original Little Mermaid is pretty freaky actually they're pretty brutal in there and it can be kind of a little bit scary kids to read honestly if you ever get the chance to read it it is a hard read because it's very very old and detailed but it's interesting if you ever want to read it so you can compare by story variants basically The Lion King and Hamlet what you would do as you what is The Lion King talk about that Hamlet also talks about and then what information is different and it Hamlet if you don't know what is a Shakespearean play say yes The Lion King is based off of a Shakespeare play I mean one of the last things you can do to compare and contrast look at the theme or the moral or lesson from the story or what we can learn from it and how you can compare that is to think about comparing themes across a different stories so for example we can have a much different theme the story fine with Bailey and her MRI and then we are from the Ravine with Vinny I always it's not working today just leave it there reitzel over the one to three different things that you can do for right now it'll be different as you get older they'll be more stuff you can do to compare and contrast in literature queso scope how much you can see your observed treatment how an author talks about a topic organization how its setup story variants you know how is this different from the original that might have come from and then theme which is the more or less than you can again compare those across several books and see if they have the same thing so now let's talk about informed National text and remember that I said informational text provides facts and information so it's true it doesn't tell a story information honestly look at all of these 5 things for literature as well except for maybe story variance or seems really have seen your story variance and informational text me you can certainly look at how its setup how the author treats the topic right kind of like if you were writing a iPhones or Androids if you like Androids better than iPhones you probably going to treat that topic a little bit nicer or have more strong feelings about it then you would about the opposite one I need an informational text we can still observe the scope so we can see how much information is it providing in like maybe one article versus an entire journal or encyclopedia about that topic words that you can use to help you find if something is being compared and contrasted because of time is an informational text what you're really going to be doing if you're not going to be using you know those five things for literature all the time you're mostly going to be comparing the information inside of the text so think about for example our example about blue whale vs. orcas that we talked about right we write a paragraph on it and then we compared what did they tell us about the blue whale versus what did they tell us about the Orca so I'm going to give you some key words you guys can use to help you find out if something is being compared and contrasted in an inch racional text Suites first ones for compare include words like similar in the same way likewise just like as well and in addition so if you see words like there's an informational text or even in a literature text you should know that there's something that's being compared and then we have some we have some words for contrast I lost my little text box so help us determine where I really I cannot click today that's what happens when Tony breakfast right away children OGE so she words that we can use for contrast are words like different in contrast metal surprise surprise on the other hand however on the contrary which always sounds really fun to say look at that supposed to be on the contrary on the contrary and he was like this instead and put a nut leg butt butt butt like what and that is basically it for comparing and contrasting in literature and informational text you just want to look at these five things and you want to look for keywords K and then infer usual temperature going to be more likely comparing information inside of the text or as with literature you would be comparing me know the organization what it's talking about and comparing it with other texts as well again if you guys have any questions just shoot me a message Dojo or leave a comment on this video post and I would be more than happy to help you have a great morning you guys
