This took me forever to mess up correctly. I mean to finish. Apologies! We hear a lot about ventilators when people talk about treating the COVID-19 patients, and this explains what they're talking about. It's too long, around 15 minutes. But there's at least 2 unrelated memes in it. everybody this took me way longer than I thought it would it's now 6:30 I was expecting that this about six hours ago but as you can imagine Maryland Riley can't imagine we're still busy rhyme sure I apologize for how late it is however since it is not mandatory Wednesday March 25th and now play March 26th about ventilators and I have spent the time putting together a tour point about what's going on with them so let's start by bringing that up and you can see where I'm going with this ventilators do this let me do that perrydell self ventilators why we might run out of them why they're so hard to make and why they're so important first off loans as you can look right underneath there that thing that looks like a bag full of marbles those are called alveoli that bag of marbles is tucked down inside the lungs at the end of branches which in Latin the word brunke ronski bronchitis get it right but those branches come off the main tube that comes up the throat called the trachea and then this part right over here oops was doing so well so let's try this again the larynx up there you are my pictures pointing the larynx is where your voice box and everything is in your vocal cords the are is absorbed and transferred into veins and arteries any questions good let's go on fancy again ventilators breathe for you the ones aren't muscles they don't move the air what moves the air is the muscle over the lungs and your abdomen called diaphragm there's times when it isn't going to work and so in an emergency paramedics and nurses and doctors will use the thing that you see down in the picture down there they put the mask over your face and then they squeeze the bag and it pushes here and it's very simple and straightforward if you've watched any medical shows you seen this before the other choice is a very complicated machine now in the video over there you see that the nurse is holding the blue bag and she's squeezing it but it's not getting enough oxygen into the lungs of the patient the way they know how much oxygen is getting it is that little thing that they put on the finger that like glows and it actually looks at the light passing through your finger to determine how much oxygen is in the blood that's moving through it so now you will watch and intubation swimming it lets me do this so sure the opening credits it's from the show called ecotrin Far Cry Co-op mail there's two things going on in that video first of all she's squeezing the bag he's got to thing clear plastic tube with a thin plastic tube inside it and he's holding this other thing over here because a handle on it it's a white that allows him to look down inside the throat is going to have to go in between the vocal cords which I kind of like this like this and that too has to go between them without damaging and sometimes depending on the condition of the patient that's very hard to do going to be so cool OK Google got everything call flex89 pulse ox is the name for that thing on the epiglottis is the back your throat and between the vocal cords and down inside as you can see you probably seen that to anytime there's a paramedics intubate or I got to put a tube in or something like that so low now what this picture actually here shows is it the actual state is of somebody who's using a ventilator you see that he's hooked up to the machine now they don't have that back down there anymore Gimli they're kept sedated while they're intubated in the reason for that is if you had a big honkin plastic tube down your throat you probably try to be coughing and pulling it out to and sew along with please other things on the ventilator they sometimes include anesthesia which keeps the patient sedated enough so that they don't make things a lot worse credit why don't we have enough of these usually we do normally in the United States we have a hundred seventy thousand of these things we have so many that almost a quarter of them are in storage cuz they're not being used usually we need a lot more the best meat almost two million people are going to need one before this is done we need or so people don't die waiting for their turn to breathe remember they talk about flattening the curve that curve is showing how many people are going to need treatment at a given time during the pandemic the higher that goes the more people are sick at the same time okay so if we spread it out it still goes high in the same number or even sometimes more people get sick but it'll be spread out so the things that we have for people to treat the disease will be able to cover everyone instead of somebody running out this is what a ventilator looks like now Greece Mall check out the price 38665 medicine anesthesia machine which has much of the same functions it controls the air temperature how much moisture the air has how hard it gets blown in half a year gets pushed in a month Egypt is suction mucus if monitor is a patient's breathing in oxygen that's everything is involved in a ventilator it's a lot of different things that's why when a car company says will help you make they're not making the whole thing they're getting the different parts from different companies that make the smaller part and they're assembling it into a larger thing example Elon Musk SpaceX Tesla guy said I'll get you a thousand Bentley you didn't build went out and bought them because they're very complicated machines ain't just an air mattress pump now it's used for Rama Road lung damage like Coben brain injury sometimes parts of the brain are injured to the point where your body doesn't know how to freeze anymore so I machine forces people with a very acute severe asthma reaction will sometimes need to be intubated congestive heart failure and muscular dystrophy and ALS which is the correct term for something called Lou Gehrig's disease in which is the nervous system in your body stops being able to control the muscle so gradually your body body your brain is no longer connected to the muscles that cause your lungs to fill and empty there's a whole list of things here you are welcome to look it up I'm moving on so can we make more sure but like everything else it will take time right now the companies that make all those subcomponents remember I explained that the machine was made out of smaller the companies that make those smaller units and started making more and more parts no one expected to need seven times as many ventilators so they don't have beans to make them much faster they don't have the workers train to assemble them and then even on top of that you saw a complicated that machine was right you can bet that there's a medical specialist on the respiration who's trained in how to use that and how to adjust it and how to maintain the patient while it's being used we don't have a lot of  either they're talking actually about using students at the schools for that in the last 20% or so of their training to be sort of train really fast and get in there and try your best remember there might be as many as a million people who needs and they've only got enough operators for about $150,000 that's going to take a lot of work the thing that's there that is that a ventilator people have designed them trying to make things like this as you can see it's using the squeeze bag like the nurse was using but instead of somebody sitting there and having to do this automated it a little bit and they can put some controls on it so that the little hooks code squeezes the bag that's an emergency that that's not a ventilator that's not something something who's in the Intensive Care Unit will be hooked up to notice how much is missing from that's me might ruin for fun it was on day 4 Download Fluffy decided enough family time when's cats are pets getting nervous and how much love and attention you're showing them there is all kinds of people how to make all kinds of things but it's not the same over here you'll see there's a Facebook group where hundreds of Engineers and medical people and just people who like building things are putting in different designs some of them are hand-drawn some of them are computer aided design and they're finding a lot of the things I've told you make it complicated to make something that would be useful in NICU when the lung failure is bad enough anything less than a full ventilator won't work here's one that actually does work and it's amazing they've only done it a few weeks but you can see the difference between that and the Machine I showed you earlier you can do it it's made from PVC piping you can see they're using a laptop computer for the display wiring cell together with alligator clips it's it's just not the same and going to at the count on a lot of money being spent very fast and a lot of people being very ingenious about how to do it people are coming up with ways to take one machine and the hose so the air is going to chew and sometimes as many as four patients so fingers crossed that works one more meme if you take the letters of the word Corona and it's like she's the third letter O is the 15th letter and yes that all up ants comedy there I believe that is the end of the presentation as you listen to the reports about what's in in the treatment of patients that are affected by this write down any questions you have I'll try to
