hi everybody welcome back to room until it's time to go over the study island for today which is atoms and elements this is the second time I'm recording it today technology is wonderful anyway just a couple points before we start all the subjects of recovering in Study Island between now and the end of the school year are going to be covering the states and I will have additional science topics cover They may involve the current problems that we're having worldwide with the coronavirus it may be about something completely unrelated but we're going to make sure to cover standards no matter what happens to our school year by the end of the year you will have covered everything that you're required to buy the State of Arizona and I'll make sure that I am here to explain you have any questions or problems a second of all day is Wednesday the 25th starting today I'm going to have daily hours where I'm available by zoo and I will post the hours each day on dojo so that if you have any questions or you just want to socialize you can connect by class and we will answer the questions about I can help you with your other subjects to answer any questions you have about what's going on in general and with that let's move on to the topic for today which is Adams and Ellen bunch I find the right screen my apologies let's share the screen can see what I'm looking atoms and elements is something we went over very early in the school year all know that as it says here atoms are the smallest units of an element that stuff all the properties of that element all materials all matter is made up of atoms there are right now 118 different l there may be more that we haven't discovered yet a lot of the ones that we do know about pretty much all the ones from like a hundred and ten on up we don't know a lot about them their man-made and they last for very short periods of time some as short as one one billionth of a second before they completely disappear there over 100 so is 118 ad when grouped together with atoms of the same type that make up elements and you remember that's what we did our reports used about and what we've been talking about when we did all the chemistry Marvin oxygen hydrogen blah blah blah blah blah all types of Adam remember the parts of an atom are going to Atomic Structure next but the parts of an atom approach on the new John in the electron self when you have a bunch of atoms that are the same height they make up elements of copper tin and aluminum atoms are too small be seen by the naked eye just lately however they have become visible to very powerful inexpensive equipment electron or other types of microscopes in the study island Austin talks about have a guy first came up with the idea of an atom I'm a bunch of thyme I did light like that no meal except that they put on the outside wax and then stops bugs from getting into it anyway when a scientist does that when they think through something but they don't actually perform the experiment that's called a thought experiment there's a lot of very famous one this obviously since you came up with the idea of an atom is one of the biggies of the jumpy made from a pilot's and to that representing everything in Universe picture we can stop there most unit of matter is the atom that makes sense right okay let's go back be quiet stop it go back to share screens we can look blessing again atoms are the building blocks of matter Adams is Legos right when you build Legos sometimes you build small chunks and you connect them together bigger groups of groups atoms are the building blocks of all matter atoms make up elements elements are what happens when all the atoms are the same kind which if the same number protons if you have a group of atoms and they all the same number of protons and make up an element all the atoms of a single element are extremely similar are identical but they're very simple now all the elements are represented in the periodic table of the elements again we've looked at this before remember I told you could tell old something was by what elements were warned included to look up there and see that element 13 114-115 Yearwood 17 or less Blank That's because when made this periodic table they hadn't been discovered yet or maybe just named I don't know about this particular periodic table the elements at the high end of it all the ones from like here and ear many of them are radioactive which means they break down because they're so big they can hold themselves together without throwing chunks off when atoms of two or more elements combined they make something called a compound the new substance has properties that are different from those of the original think about it right we've talked about this example I like to give is sodium right is chemical symbol n a sub there is number 11 third down from the top to the left and over here chlorine number 17 sodium is a metal that explodes if you put it in water chlorine is a gas it will kill you if you inhale sodium and chlorine together reduce sodium chloride a compound but it acts completely different from the other two sodium explode kill you sodium chlorine sodium chloride is table salt and that just makes food taste better so that's pretty much it for this study I tomorrow we're going you looking at a time of structure if you have any questions you can always
