This is a very quick review of these two SI assignments. We learned this and used it all year, and the Data part you've been covering in math. This video covers the assignments that were due Monday, 3/23 and Tuesday, 3/24.

hellosign 6mr down again in the laboratory we're going to be discussing the study islands that were assigned for March 23rd and March 24th cuz we got over this material before but I want you to have the information available to you so the first thing we're going to do is we're going to go to screen where are the information is located as you can see scientific inquiry is where both of these come from scientific investigations the lesson basically refers to experimentation scientific investigations are designed to solve problems or answer questions scientific method is a process that provides scientist investigators The Logical approach to problem solving testable questions this is important because some things are testable some things aren't opinions are not testable we can design an experiment but it can't have our opinion about what the results are going to be remember the first step in each a scientific experiment is going to be asking a question so testable questions should objects organisms or phenomena things that happen you research the topic if you'll remember that's why I say there I am okay see I'm pointing to the magazine there no it's useful to perform some basic research on the topic it's essential because the next step is a hypothesis and a hypothesis is never ever I guess because we've done research the next step is going to be to form the hypothesis if I can make hypothesis is not a question it is a statement it should be clear it should be testable we're going to design an experiment we have things to change those are called variables the independent variable is sorry thank you the independent is the variable that we change and the dependent variable is the one that changes because of our experiment we collect record the data we interpret the data and then at the end he come to our conclusion compare the results that I bought offices and then communicate the fight be less than goes into different types of ways you can collect specimens we can seek information we can do a laboratory experiment we can make model a model is a computer program that takes all the best information we have at the moment and puts it into a simulation one that gets here constants are things that won't change it's kept the same during the whole experiment we want to make sure that we're only testing one thing one variable the best way to do that is to make sure everything stays the same except for the one variable in the example below they're doing an experiment with sunflowers so the things we want to keep constantly going to make sure that the size of the POTUS soil water sunlight all these things need to be the same so that if something changes we know that it's because of what we changed in the experiment then there's a discussion of independent and dependent variables independent variable is what we change on purpose the dependent variable is what changes because we change the independent variable complicated but go through the materials pretty and then you should do a control group remember it for only changing one thing and that's changing the results you want to make sure that there's a group that we don't change anything in because we change more than one thing that we can never prove what it was that caused our changes we do it more than once because if you do it more than once if you make a mistake in one it's covered by the other one is there different types of models if you ever watch Mythbusters it's fun they blow stuff up a lot you should check it out but if you want first they do a small scale model before they build the major test of what they're trying to prove or disprove Salisbury important models can show you what something looks like an architect will build models of a building before they put all that money and filled in the actual building and before a car company builds a car they'll build a car show you what it looks like and also how it works how something functions and they'll use that to try and test how it works in the real system miles to have limitations okay things work the same some things don't that's why you test nail median mean mode and range are things you should have all done over in math already I'm not going to go over it you should absolutely look on look at it when you do the scientific investigations lesson quick side note please remember I take attendance by seeing who is attempted to test even if you've already. make sure that you attempt the practice question moving on let's go back a step and it went away that menus Adair that give me a second to load it back up sure if I care. better than this out but I want you to see you don't have to be perfect to be excellent organizing analyzing and communicating data I believe I listed it as organizing and interpreting data because when you look at it that's what it says up there on the type we went through this again a couple times and we've used it throughout the year to discuss scientific work tables are one way to arrange it there's different types of table Circle graphs bar graphs remember all this line graph what is a pattern well once you get a graph drawn one of the reasons we like to use graphs is because they form patterns let's go back and take a look some charts will show you a pattern this very clearly shows that the more time there is gross there is okay other charts are not as good at showing patterns for example a circle graph won't show you a pattern clearly it will show you a comparison different charts are useful for thanks for your daily temperatures at noon so we can see a pattern IND of temperatures different each day but because the weather changes every day it is showing Anthony useful data you just record the temperatures and it does help us understand what the temperatures are an example of a pattern is right now in New York City the number of people infected with the with the phone virus causing covid-19 the number of people is doubling every 3 days that's a lot that doesn't just go up like this on an alarm that goes up like this on a curve it's getting steeper and steeper and if you looked at the the chart that I showed in the current events video remember the map of course see how it's going up like that that's because a graph like that is said to be going up exponentially if it's going up a little at a time we're just adding okay but it's going like this it's doubling every 3 days it's called exponential growth scientific evidence and conclusions evidence is necessary because evidence is what we use to make our decisions on when we done an experiment record the data and we then have to analyze it after Gathering and interpreting data a scientist May draw a conclusion your experiment may not give you enough data to draw a reasonable conclusion in that case what you learn is that you need to do either more German for different experiments bias bias happens all the time and you know that right when your favorite team loses cuz the referee makes a bad call you say there by it's not they are usually it's based on a preconceived notions somebody has they have already decided in advance as you have a strong opinion or let's say I am governor of some State and I decide I don't want to close hotels because of the virus and everyone notices that guy owns a lot of you might be trying to make money that doesn't say that that's why I did it it just says that he is biased he has a personal interest okay now analyzing scientific include it's the nature of science to be skeptical or question everything so if you read something and the science says this is change we expect the weather to change because of climate change that's great but what you want to do is you want to see how they did the experiment you want to see if they went to school for that or if it's a guy who works at Jersey Mike's Sandwich Shop was really good with drawing charts you want to look for mistakes in their conclusion based on the numbers sometimes you can see things in more than see if they were biased see if there's another way to interpret their dead or sometimes something has more than one answer okay description explanations descriptions have to be based in an observation okay the physical characteristics remember we talked about that with element physical characteristics sample would be gold is shiny it is heavy and very dense it has a yellowish color a golden color these are physical characteristics descriptions are direct observations and measurements okay explanations are when you take a description and description of events and try and provide a basis for it to clarify something they're based usually by taking an observation example of the give over here write the book is on the floor and down here they say the book is on the floor because it fell down because of you know gravity so that's explanation versus directions the alternative explanations you should read through that it's fairly slow reading but you should try to understand it multiple related variables sometimes if we're not doing an experiment but we're looking at different things there can be more than one thing changing and we have to take that into account when we make our decision okay when you have more than one thing changing you have to be careful when you make a conclusion example I am pasty I may be pasty because my family is all white enough to read a newspaper through or it may be that I don't go outside or it may be that I'm wearing pasty face makeup or that anyone if a bunch of reasons so you can't make a decision until you simplify what it is you're examining and clarify what it is your reasoning is based on science communication important thing is that when I was in the Navy in a while since I said that to you isn't it when I was in the Navy we have to keep log books and books it was written as be written in ink cancel because they had to see if we were trying to change anything but so if there was a mistake remember I told you we had to cross it out with one line we were required to keep these records so that one would always see what was going on at all times because we would take to make me need to make engineering decisions based on those numbers and those decisions to be a matter of life or death so we had to accurate and precise ways to share scientific work an oral report for example the presentations we making class or if you're a scientist they have big conferences well not now then text you back in the day a big conferences for doctors and scientists resent their papers orally drawing spreadsheet graphs written copies of your of your research and report and Publishing results those are the two first Study Island assignments that you were given the expectation is that you will have done them or at least try them by the end of Tuesday the 24th of March Tomorrow there's another assignment tomorrow there will be another video and turn off the lights in the lab and I will
