7A ELA Assignments

Instructors
Term
2018-2019
Description

Welcome to 7th Grade English Language Arts (ELA)! The course is split into two sections, literature and composition. The composition class is designed so that scholars will write every day, keep a portfolio to track progress, set goals, and explore multiple ways to convey their own voice. In literature class, we will analyze short fiction and non-fiction texts, poetry and other forms of writing that is culturally and linguistically responsive to interpret multiple perspectives and create connections among literary elements. As we get closer to the AZ Merit and NWEA academic growth assessment in the spring, scholars will be prepared with the skills and strategies to meet individual and class goals. I am looking forward to a productive and successful school year!

Materials needed for class every day:

1) Planner
2) Binder
3) Pencils
4) Dry Erase Markers

Rules and Expectations:

1. BE PROMPT

Students should arrive to class on time every day and in their seat prior to the tardy bell ringing. Materials are expected to be out and ready to go, everything else, including backpacks should be put away underneath each student’s desk. Tardiness without a pass will result in a lunch detention. Consistent tardiness will result in further disciplinary action and parent contact.

2. BE POSITIVE

Students are highly encouraged and reminded to practice growth mindset and focus on what is within your control, this includes monitoring their own behavior, and not focusing on other students.

3. BE PREPARED

Come to class with your planner, accountability card, homework, pencil and any materials needed for class every day.

4. BE PRODUCTIVE

Students are expected to give their best effort in every aspect of class. This means being prepared for class, staying on task, and following all school/classroom rules and assignment directions.

5. BE POLITE

Use positive and supportive language with your peers, teachers, and staff at AMS. This means we say please and thank you, never bully or belittle others, or curse. Additionally, this means that we respect each other, the classroom environment, and the school.

Write about a time where you felt similar to the way Amy Tan felt as a teenager in “Fish Cheeks”. It does not have to be the exact same situation, but the feelings you felt during this experience needs to be associated with struggling to be who you are in front of others, or some kind of identity crisis.

Your response needs to be at least 6-8 sentences and make sure it is something you are comfortable sharing with Ms. Hickcox (I will be the only one reading your responses).

Due:
