- Description

Welcome to 6th Grade English Language Arts (ELA)!
The course is split into two sections, literature and composition. The composition class is designed so that scholars will write every day, keep a portfolio to track progress, set goals, and explore multiple ways to convey their own voice. In literature class, we will analyze short fiction and non-fiction texts, poetry and other forms of writing that is culturally and linguistically responsive to interpret multiple perspectives and create connections among literary elements. As we get closer to the AZ Merit and NWEA academic growth assessment in the spring, scholars will be prepared with the skills and strategies to meet individual and class goals.
Students will be provided daily instruction where they will be the center of each lesson. Lessons will be differentiated to individual student needs and student engagement is the upmost priority. The classwork will serve as great resources to them as they will complete their daily homework assignments and study for quizzes and exams. It is extremely important that scholars attend every class, complete all homework assignments, master each objective, abstain from distractions and follow our classroom’s five keys to success; respect, responsibility, courage, self-discipline and perseverance every day.
Materials needed for class everyday:
1) Planner
2) ELA Binder with dividers
3) Pencils
4) ELA composition/spiral bound notebook
5) Dry Erase Markers
6) ELA folder
Classroom Rules:
1) Be on time.
Students should arrive to class on time and follow the Opening Routine of entering quietly, taking out planners and homework, taking out materials they will need for class, placing their backpack underneath their desk, and getting started on the Bell Ringer.
2) Stay in assigned seat.
For each activity the students are told where they should be. If they need to move from their seat they need to receive permission from Ms. Nixon first.
3) Use positive and supportive language.
Examples: “Thank you”, “You did great”, “Everyone makes mistakes”.
Call everyone by their appropriate names.4) Keep all distractions in your backpack.
Anything that is not required or needed for the lesson is considered a distraction.
5) Treat the room with respect.
At the end of class, students are asked to make sure all materials are returned to their designated areas. They are also instructed to take everything brought in with them. They are encouraged to look around their seat for trash to throw away on their way out.
