Algebra 1 Assignments

Instructors
Term
2018-2019
Description

Algebra 1 focuses on twelve main math strands, namely: Algebra foundations, Equations and Expressions, and Probability and Data Analysis. Each Saxon lesson has three components: Warm up, New concepts, and Practice. Saxon has a cumulative approach, where each lesson builds off the previous lesson. 30 questions a night might seem like a lot, but the questions are designed to help student retain the information throughout the entire year.

Notes for Lesson 86 and stars from 87.

Eratosthense was a Greek mathematician and geographer. He calculated the size of the Earth's circumference using ropes, sticks, angles, and the sun. He figured out that in Alexandria and Syene had to have difference degrees in terms of distance from the sun because on noon of the Summer Solstice, Syene's wall tower did not cast a shower, but Alexandria's wall tower did. At noon, the sun is directly above the Earth and the Summer Solstice is when the Earth is at it's maximum tilt towards the sun.

Once he figured out the proportional relationship by using the length of shadow cast, the tower, and the sun, he was able to figure out the degrees  (you do not need the exact distance from the sun because you only need to have a proportional ratio of two sides, i.e how tall the tower is and how long the shower is. He could use Pythagorean's theorem to calculate distance of the sun if he wanted it. It was not important for what he was calculating, and there is no evidence that he did the calculation, but again a lot of information has been lost since 246 BCE.)  Once he figured out the degrees and the fact that the Earth curved, he was able to find the arc of the circumference between Syene and Alexandria. He was able to determine that it was 1/15 of the Earth's circumference, which told him the total circumference.

Again, he did this with rope (his measuring tool since measuring tape was not invited yet), rocks as markers, the sun, logic, and mathematical principles. Since the Greeks used a different measuring system than we do, his estimation is somewhere between 1% (incredible) and 16% (still amazing) of the actual circumference of the Earth taken by modern techniques.

Also, keep in mind that Pythagoras created his theorem in 500 BCE, which was almost 300 years prior to Eratosthenes. And his work is still used today.
