all right good morning again 5A I have your next to assignments we're going to be talking about today you guys are actually already really good at these so they should be pretty easy peasy for you guys to go do we talk about draw inferences all the time and at this point you have a really really deep understanding of what characters are regardless those are two assignments characters and draw inferences all right if you've not passed it or if you got a 70 lower than your goal is to get at 80% or higher if you have already passed it please aim for a higher score however if you're someone who has passed it and gotten a hundred percent already test yourself so you can get another 100% case about we're going to be talking about so I know he's nuts look really long I will try to be quick because I'm sure nobody wants to watch you know 20 minutes and notes draw inferences in characters in combining them into one lesson this is that they kind of feed off of each other right because one thing that you need to do when you have characters as you need to make a lot of inferences about them cuz he authors not going to tell you everything but first let's start with what a character is at this point if you don't know what a is Ivy there been a really bad teacher you just haven't been paying attention right but we know that characters are people animals or objects that an author uses to tell story remember that these can be real or make-believe right think of like Toy Story obviously toys can't come to life unless they do we just don't know about it and characters are just like this problems if once they feelings I thought they need to go making character said to get us to be able to relate to them so regardless of whether that's an object or some sort of animal analyze characters and take a closer look at them one of the first questions that you can ask is what traits does the character have and we know already that traits are special things about characters right whether it's their looks or the way that act but in case you forget please write down that traits are interesting things about a character and again this Tempe their appearance this can be the things that they do is to be the things they like just anything that's going to make them stand out or make them seem like they're special or unique it away case you want to find out what traits does the character have you know because that helps you get a little bit deeper into what their personality be like and it helps you with the next question what relationships does the character have if I relationships remember that we don't just mean like boyfriend and girlfriend but usually what people attended think relationship can be any type of connection that a character has with another character or an object right look let's say that you had a character that had a pet rock that character and a truck was still have a relationship because that character with a little pet rock right so relationships are connections between people War things we talked about relationships a lot with text structure we talked no problem and solution and cause and effect how those are relationships of characters can have relationships with people or their environment or things around them the same way that they can be in an actual relationship quote on quote with a boyfriend or girlfriend just remember that relationships are can I just let me find out what you know about the character and the people that they are connected to where the things you're their connect to you and ask yourself why does the character do something it is important to know why the character play something because it gives us background information about the character like if we know that there's a reason that somebody shows up late to school every single day right that's going to give us a little insight into their life and why they're doing that everyday wears if we just never asked we're just going to assume that person just doesn't want to be at school on time and most of the time that's not the case I talked to figure out why they're doing something whether it's why they're acting this way or why they're treating somebody differently or why they're laying in bed for 5 hours and refusing to get up that's going to give you some background information about them and then you would ask who is telling the story and this is important because this influences the point of view right so we talked before in the past about credibility and how you have credible and reliable narrators to figure out who's telling the story because let's say that you have somebody that you don't like that doesn't like you and then they're telling a story about you that's going to influence the way that people see you because obviously that person if they don't like you were going to tell was skewed or different version of who you are as a person that's going to affect other people's point of view about you so it's important to figure out who's telling the story because that will let us know if they're reliable if we could trust them if we can trust the things they're saying I think about that story the mixer with Blackie the dog Blackie was telling a story he wasn't a reliable narrator I mean he spent an entire story thinking that he was going to just like be friends with us that was beating him right I turned out that the old guy was trying to have blocky blocky help him Rob the houses and so black he's Viewpoint and the fact that he was the narrator influence how we saw the events going on around him so that's why it's important to God. stories here looking for the narrator the person telling the story and remember that it doesn't always have to be a character from the book that is telling a story that you can have outside near readers that we never name that are telling the story think of Harry Potter 4 Apple entire Harry Potter series is narrated by some outside person that is never named that we don't know but it's not a character in the story and then the point of view is the view of the narrator once you find out who is sewing store that helps break down is it a character is it an outside person what do they know about these people again I'm trying to speed through these so that you guys don't have to watch this for 15 minutes so I'm going to fast as possible to take your notes you need to one of the other things you can ask is What conflict does the character have remember that conflict means problem right so we want to figure out what problem is because of the most stories are reasons that the even introduce the character is because there's some sort of problem going on that they need to solve right if you remember our little curve here with our intro Center climax in a resolute is climax area is where we find out what the conflict is in the rest of this leading down to the resolution is how they eventually solve the problem and that's how most stories go so it's important to figure out what conflict the character has because I'll help you determine what they're going to be doing in the story and why great summer conflict equals problem and we're not going to get into it too much right now but remember that there are two types of conflict right or is external conflict which means that the problem is resisting outside of the character and then there's internal conflicts with a problem is existing inside of the character so external conflicts would be things like you know Bullies Are people that mean you harm internal conflicts would be things like you're struggling with your jittery spirituality or your self-esteem queso internal means inside external outside I'm in the last thing you can ask yourself about characters is how does the character change and we don't just mean physically weak I mean emotionally like maybe you know they were a bully at the beginning of the story and towards the end they would like the nicest person you could have ever met or maybe somebody was you know really overweight and then they got super super buff and that's how they change so can be either physical or it can be in them Bushnell internal change inside the character what is that we can help us understand a little bit more about characters is by making inferences okay because inferences or whenever we take background in nation and we put it together what we already know we make an inference so if you remember a little formula it's a what we know close background info not equals an inference right because we're taking information prior knowledge and we're combining it with what we know to make an inference so like if you call somebody on the phone and you hear out music in the background and they're like what what what I can't hear you your understanding of concerts and music venues would tell you that you could make the inference that they're most likely at a show and that that's why they can't hear you right in that would have to require prior knowledge about what concert sound like case of inferences are just special educated guesses I need use context clues with y'all not going to tell you everything about characters or what's going on because that would be tedious and detailed and nobody wants to read that right nobody's going to sit there and read about the most detailed person that ever existed we make inferences because it gives the author time to tell us about exciting things going on in the story I'm to make inferences though there are five steps that you can take to help you in case you are struggling and you guys make inferences all the time and probably don't even realize it because we're constantly information on the making guesses About That Bass on what's going on around us and what we already know so your first step when you make inferences for reading is to obviously read the passage carefully right stop and get done reading it you went to ask yourself some questions and look for certain detail so look for details about what a person does what does that tell you about them so for example if you know there's somebody that goes around stealing right or somebody that I'm donating to charity that's going to tell you different things about that character and how you feel about them then you want to look for details that describe a place or event what are these details tell you and knowing the place or event that is around the character is important because think about our story the first day of school right if we had it known that they were just singing at a time when segregation was still around then it probably would have given us a different perspective about what was going on in that story so the fact that there was an event going on with Brown versus the Board of Education that he was a little insight as to why they might be acting scared or not wanting to go to school right in those those give us inferences about the character banana for thing you can do is make it guess finally so I can you look for those details about what they do and where they are or what's happening around them you want to go ahead and make your guess about the character I after you've made your guess you want to look for support so you want to check to see if you can find support for your guess because if there is support then your inferences probably right if there's not support than maybe your inference might be wrong so anytime you make an inference you want to double check for textual evidence can you want to go into the text when you ask yourself is there anything in here that's of course the guess what I'm making and if there's not a problem a good inference if there is and you're probably on the right track day and that's the easiest way to make inferences is just double check your work like that you know look for that textual evidence like you would support anything that you should be writing or reading k mentioned before I sign out of here is remember that when we draw inferences we are not actually drawing a picture remember from your difference from your dictionaries draw means to make so we're drawing inferences
