okay so first of all high except I haven't seen you guys in forever and I really really miss you guys but you know how I am business as usual time to get back into the grind and I'm learning here okay so this instructional video is for you guys to refresh yourself on these notes that we've taken and so that you know what your assignment is you've two assignments that are due today if you have access to 10 algae you should be doing these two topics on Study Island yes even if you've already done them even if you have a hundred percent you should still test yourself again to see if you can get 100% again if you don't have a hundred percent you should be aiming for 80% or higher can that's what I want to see hear these two together and I think it's going to be a nice way too easy guys into the week so if you want to be a super nerd and you want to set up your notes that would be awesome because note taking is going to be super beneficial to help I went ahead and set up our notes Cornell style for you you have your title of top-tier multiple meaning words and connotation and denotation and then I went ahead and wrote out some of the important terms that we're going to be talking about today all right so let's go ahead and get started we talked about these before and I know that a lot of you guys already done these on study island but it's a good refresher and nice break from melting your brains on fortnite or whatever it is you guys are doing while your second home okay. We're taking some of them want multiple meaning words are in the first place okay we know that multiple meaning words are words that are spelled like other words but they have different meanings than them so think of it like I we talked about pencil and write you've got the lead and then you've got the lead right over spelled the same but they weigh different meanings and you need to use context meaning that you need to use the stuff around the word or in the passage. figure out what you mean you're trying to use right there words that are spelled alike but have different meanings another thing you need context clues and the sentences message to figure out what it means talk about a few examples here really quick so for example we have the word concrete right concrete can mean real or it can and you know that hard building material rights over example you can have a concrete idea what you mean a real idea or you can have a concrete building VA Building made of concrete and in order to determine which type of concrete they would be using and that you have to use context clues this site are they talking about something that's real and they talk about a strong building material and usually the easiest way to determine what something actually means to take what you think the definition is in replace the word right like that I have a strong building material idea or could I have a real idea right in that way you a little bit of context there to help you figure out what the word means another example would be a word like staple and mean Lowe's metal hooks that attach things or a valuable resource right like right now we're seeing at grocery stores and everything that people are going out in there buying Staples and buy things or food that they need that is important for the survive right so like important Staples maybe stuff like flour and eggs and butter and milk when we talk about Staples I go into a stapler we're talkin about the metal hooks so you have to determine if everybody running to the store to buy staples air stapler or is everybody running to the store to buy valuable resources I would say it's all there any questions about that but I can't see your hands if you questions anyways if you get confused by this please just message me on jojo k okay this phone sounds great I know you could do that in a long time so you have words that are spelled alike but they have different meanings and then you can break down those words and everything's like denotation and connotation right denotation means is denotation is what a word literally means the literal definition of a word it would help if I could actually spelled definition yeah and one way I remember that denotation means definition is I think denotation and definition both start with d e so I remember that they mean the same thing denotation definition denotation means definition right when we talked about Dina we're talking about what the word actually means if you were to look it up and it is dictionary and this is different from connotation because connotation is the emotional suggestion of a word get back here a little text box emotional suggestion of a word and what that really means is you want to think how is this word being used is it a negative mean or is it a positive meeting right so you want to think of it like hot sauce levels like what say we have the words happy content and ecstatic okay and let's say that these are all hot sauce Scoville scale this is going to be your mild word so the one that's not spicy at all this is going to be your medium level word this is going to be your hot spicy word K so all three these words mean the exact same thing they all mean happy right however they have different connotations when you use them if I say that I'm happy I give the general impression that I okay if I say I'm content I'm giving me emotional question that I'm a little bit happier than usual but I stay I'm ecstatic I give the emotional suggestion that I'm like jumping up and down for joy and I have something amazing going on okay so that's what connotation is what a word emotion Lisa go it's kind of like when we talked about in class on muesum isms right and how euphemisms are our way of saying something negative by making it sound less negative right like when you call somebody physically-challenged does it pose two crippled because that would be really really mean to say to them connotation is kind of like that it's giving you the emotional suggestion of something to tell you whether that word is going to be negative or positive so another way you can think about this is let's say that we have words fantastic an absurd k both of these have the same meaning they both mean different from ordinary so both of their denotations their denotations are different from ordinary however even though they have the same definition their connotation is going to be totally different right so these both me morning AA meeting like you're out of this world or they might be a little bit strange or something like that right one of them has a positive connotation or positive emotion attached to in the other one has a negative emotion attached to it and the way you want to think about what the connotation might be is the how you would feel if somebody use these words so like let's say that in your friend or whatever built like a nice little house on Minecraft or something right and you felt like home and the house is so cool like I want to get that house as well if you're going to tell your friend that's a little Minecraft Builders really really cool you're not going off afternoon be like this is absurd absurd Minecraft build it ever seen because that's going to make your friend feel really really bad and it has a negative connotation when you say it if you go out to your friend and you go wow in this Minecraft build as fantastic as a positive connotation there's an emotional congestion there that's a positive great word as opposed to observe which is going to make somebody feel really really negative about themselves stop brand new shoes right now with your friend to walk up and be like oh my God those shoes are absurd you want them to walk up to you and tell you how fantastic your shoes are right because of surd would hurt your feelings and that's the difference between denotation and connotation I want to make this video too long cuz I know most you're going to be talking for reload time again to do one example real quick and I straight lines there multiple meaning words because I think that you guys will have a pretty good understanding of denotation as long as you remember that denotation is the dictionary definition and connotation is out with make somebody feel k we'll talk about multiple meaning words and we can use context to figure those out to take a look at the sample question Arts as I was saying earlier the easiest way to figure out what a word means and you have the right denotation for it is by replacing it with what the definition might be right so we're looking at the water creative Groove On The Hill as it traveled downward so not take all of these answers and replaced and ride the water created a long narrow channel does that make sense as long as you know that a long narrow channel right is whenever you have like a long past because like a river is a long narrow channel I could be a possible answer the water created a fixed routine on the hill is a travel downward if I walk up you and I say hey my water had a fixed routine would you know what I'm talking about probably not so you can mark it off as most likely not a correct answer and then we have the water created a groove on the hill is it true downward so the water created a track on a music record can water go around making music then I know a lot of rappers these days sound like they're just water making music but no water can't go around making musical records rights we know that can't be the answer where the water created an enjoyable experience on the hill as a triangle Town words Bonnet can definitely create an invoice experience but in this context right here we're not talking about a water slide or something fun like that right so we know that this can't be the answer which leaves us with a a long narrow channel so why is this a multiple meaning word because we know the you can also mean dancing right that's why we have these answers down here about music and a fixed routine because group is commonly used to refer to dancing with use context to figure out that water can't make music have to do with traveling downhill so it's got to be something like this these are the other two assignments that you need to do multiple meaning words connotation and
