so hi welcome to your first instructional video never done this before so be wanted any type of collision shoes just bear with me and hopefully they will get better the first two assignments that you guys have due today our academic and domain-specific vocabulary and context clues if you did not see my earlier video my morning greeting please know that if you have technology you need to be doing these dogs the island if you don't have technology available that you should be picking up a cat although I don't know how you would see this video without technology right I'm going to go over some notes and talk about the topic for a little bit for your old basically is to just completely Study Island topics or if you have a packet for you to complete these two topics in your pocket however if you notice even if you have completed these topics please do them again yes even if you have a phone 2% is good for you to refresh your brain and get you something to do if you have a hundred percent already test yourself see if you can get a hundred percent again if not in for an 80% or higher K we've talked about academic and domain-specific vocabulary for very a long time before break you guys have those dictionaries that we made so you know use those to help you on your Study Island but it would be super beneficial for you to take notes however I understand if you know while you're stuck at home and I can actually watch if you're taking notes if you decide not to but I would recommend that you do go ahead and set them up Cornell style the way that I have them right now the person we're going to talk about is what academic and language even mean so make sure you put academic language and your important terms call him all right and we know that academic language is language that is used in school books teachers instructions and test in these nuts are in Study Island as well only slightly different of course I can't drag you well we can see how swimmingly this is going okay art show examples of academic language would be anything that we put into are dictionaries right so for example words like context words like textual evidence oh my gosh why can I not send anything else right now we're click describe and explain anything that we put into those dictionary you're going to see is academic language K and academic language is very similar to domain specific language but domain specific language stays within a certain subject so for example any math terms that you use are going to be considered domain-specific and this right here is a good hint of what context clues about can you notice that I put words in certain subjects, or domain that, is there to tell you that your context clues for subjects means that it means the same thing as domains K so some things were going to see for stuff like this RL let's say you have math for example right you might see words like perimeter area of polynomial he's got social studies you're going to see stuff like War Century or law and then for you no greeting or Ela is when we're going to see words like contacts textual evidence to Sky things like that that are specific to that domain or that subject okay so the way you want to think about domain-specific is that it relates to a certain subject area it's kind of like when you play soccer right when you hear words like a yellow card or gold keeper those are all domain specific meaning that those words are words you would know if you knew about the domain of soccer all right so that's basically what academic and domain-specific vocabulary is we're going to do an example after this in a little bit just know that it's any type of word that it's used in specific area thanks and you got to know a lot about this like I said because we did those dictionaries and you guys did really really well on them so the next time you want to talk about your second one text losing again this is something we do frequently and something that you will use whatever you do academic language the first one to talk about what context is right because a lot of times you guys here contacts please we don't ever have anybody actually tell you what context means another context refers to the parts that come before or after a specific pic word or passage the basically anything that comes around a word that you might want to know the definition to is context right which means that context clues are those hints that you get from the context so it's anything that might come before the word after the word be in the entire paragraph be in the next paragraph he's and even okay so contacts has anything up around a specific word of Passage you might be trying to understand and then context clues are those hints that come from the context that help you understand the word I don't want this video to go too long cuz I feel like a bunch of guys are going to tune out because you know I see it happen all the time during notes I want to go ahead and move on to the example if you get a chance and you need extra help go take a look at these notes on study island and they'll give you a lot of the same information I just tried to break it down so it was a little bit easier for you to see let's talk about our example Chapel the straight from study island so again you can go take a look at it too so first thing we want to do anytime that we read and examples we will look at the question because we want to know what information that we should be looking Lucy right here that are question is according to the passage sediment is so we're looking for that word sediment all right I'm going to read this you and then we're going to try to use some context clues to figure out what does academic language might mean will this way Bobby domain-specific and if you can tell me what don't mean it is it would be really awesome all right so the Petrified Forest National Park is in Arizona and holds the world's largest collection of petrified wood petrified what is a tree that is turned to stone around 200 to 250 million years ago at 3000 ft thick blanket of dirt have to die in trees from fully Decay the sediment was carried down into the wood by water as a result minerals replace the Living Wood cells petrified Logs with an uncovered by rivers and storms that eroded the land unlike other fossils the trees have kept the same shape they had when they were living so now we want to figure out what setting that means of the first thing I always do just go answer by answer and see what we can so first things first though we need to look at what sediment was used in right the context around if it says set him it was carried down into the wood by water and what this is really telling us is that if he can get into wood and it's a bit buy water. It's probably something that's really small right do you want to know that sentiment has to be something that small write the looks look at answer is material left by water wind or ice Elston material that's left by water wind or ice be small absolutely it can write to rent a weed that is one of our possible answers cuz we don't know yet now let's look at Bebe says water left inside of a tree or plant now we know already but the sentiment is being carried down into the woods by water or we going to guess that our answer is water carrying water to put inside of a plant no probably not right because it doesn't make a lot of sense like they could have just told us it was water at that point I thought you were going to eliminate be next we're going to look at living for yourself trapped inside of a stone have you guys are remember that trick that I taught you were to hit Ctrl F to find something on a page to help you find a little bit quicker you'll notice that they about living plant cell and here they talk about living would cells right so if we know that the Sedum is being carried into wood and that sentiment could possibly do minerals cuz that weird shows up next year do you think if it said it would be living cells to replace living cells your answer to that should be no right because why would we go around replacing living cells with other living cells and things that doesn't make a lot of sense unless you're a scientist doing some crazy experiments rights we know that CD can't be a dancer and now we look at d a mineral trapped inside decaying matter a lot of people are going to automatically jump to the answer key because they see mineral and they see mineral right however what's important to look at is decaying her earlier and hear it told us that petrified wood is something that doesn't Decay anymore Decay meaning rot so we know that it doesn't anymore that it can't possibly be in mineral that trapped inside her if all of the stuff is talking about things that don't Decay so that means that it can't be a mineral even though we want to put that answer means using context clues in eliminating a is there as we can guess at this package emocore domain specific words sediment is most likely material left by water when their eyes and that's what I'm expecting to see you guys kind of do and think about whatever you do academic language Ordonez whenever you're using context clues eliminate use those hints and write down information that you know about it that's going to help you okay you guys have any questions please comment on the video or link below or send me a message on Jojo I would appreciate it if you showed me that you watched it and then you took some of these notes or that you at least paid attention to it by doing an exit ticket in the comments and telling me one example from that you come up with by yourself would be a type of question you might see that has academic language and it just like we did for our dictionaries you get these two done need to make sure that you get this academic and domain-specific vocabulary context clues done if you have to pack it do the ones in the packet if you have Study Island do the study island topic K use your notes message is all that jazz thanks for coming to my virtual class today
