Welcome to 5th Grade ELA!

A LITTLE ABOUT ME...

Hey ya’ll (a little southern greeting for ya:)!! I am Ms. Melody Ray. I was born and raised in Western North Carolina and have lived there all of my life. I moved to AZ in June of this year. This will be my 21st year teaching (17 years in 3rd grade, 1 year in 2nd, 2 years in 4th/5th). In 1993, I earned a Bachelor of Elementary Ed. degree from East Coast Bible College. I have a playful shorkie named Piper Alexis who is a little spoiled and is always happy to see me when I come home! I enjoy traveling, movies, reading, and singing, and when football rolls around, MY DALLAS COWBOYS!!! FUN FACT: I have traveled to Africa three times and have eaten camel & burrow… tastes like chicken! J

A LITTLE ABOUT ELA...

This is a sample of the goals we have for this year:

*Reading for comprehension, fluency, and information.

*Pulling out key words & phrases in order to answer questions in complete sentences restating part of the question.

*Reading various works of literature while identifying literary elements. [plot/setting/character analysis/problem/solution]

*Using compare & contrast to analyze text.

*Learning proper grammar usage, capitalization, punctuation, and proper spelling.

*Paraphrasing & summarizing.

*Reporting on a topic using multimedia components.

*Planning, drafting, revising, and editing to produce clear and coherent writing.

*Writing opinions, explanatory text, and narratives.

So as you can see, those are a lot of goals.. and that is JUST a sample! But together we will work hard to accomplish them all.

Please know that the safety and well-being of your child will be my utmost concern. I will do my best to provide a safe and loving environment that will be most conducive to them getting the best 5th grade education possible.

A LITTLE ABOUT COMMUNICATION...

There are three GREAT ways to contact me:

*Class Dojo (if you haven't joined...send me your phone number or email and I will send you an invite!)

*Email me… mray@amsdesertsky.org

*Call the school and leave a message on my school voicemail (623)242-2597. (I will not be able to take calls during the school day, but if you leave a message I will return your call within 24 hours at the latest.)

....................................It is my pleasure to work with you this school year and to be a part of your child's education.

A LITTLE ABOUT BEHAVIOR ...

Since dragons breathe FIRE.... As AMSDS Dragons, we will use this as our code of ethics/class rules:

F.I.R.E.

Focus… Integrity… Respect… and Excellence in every area.

Students who exhibit this will be rewarded. Those who do not will be given another chance by a verbal warning. Next will be a name on the board a visual warning. The third time I will issue a learning-based writing assignment consequence that will be due the very next school day and I will contact the parent. After that I will put a signature on the accountability card. (Any time a circumstance warrants it, teachers reserve the right to forgo the first steps and go right to the accountability card.) Please know these measures are to keep students safe and to ensure maximum learning takes place.

To best be prepared for each school day students will need to...
1-Have agendas signed every Mon., Tue., Wed., Thur....
2-Have all homework turned in on time... (10 points off a day, I do not accept it on the third day and it will be a zero, unless there have been absences and/or extenuating circumstances have been communicated.)
3-Have a notebook for each subject ... 4 total: Bellwork, Reading, Writing, Spelling
4-Have writing utensils...
