AMS Flower

Visual Arts 2021-22

Welcome to the Visual Arts Educational Program at the Academy of Math and Science Flower Campus.

My name is Barbara Perez and I am thrilled to begin this school year as the Visual Art Literacy Educator at AMS Flower.  We are facing unusual challenges this year, but together we can remain healthy and strong! Health safety is a primary concern for the art studio and we are following all procedures as directed.

This is my fifth year at AMS.  I have a MA in Visual Art from Concordia and my BA from Loyola University of Chicago. I am a proud mom of a wonderful daughter and grandmother to 2 dogs and a cat.

I am an artist in my own right, and believe visual art supports all educational learning styles and subject areas.  My passion is creating opportunities for my students to explore the arts with an eye to career success and self-satisfaction in expressing themselves creatively.  To this end my students have exhibited in museums and on university campuses locally, nationally and internationally. They are published in textbooks, online and represent the United States in eleven countries.

While my teaching experience includes kindergarten, my passion is the visual arts.

For over 30 years I have developed programming and curriculum for K-12 students in the visual arts in Illinois and in Arizona.  Working closely with museums, community businesses and art professionals I have created authentic experiential interactions for my students fostering lifelong learning through the visual arts.

Providing a discipline based educational approach, as a framework for critical problem solving, is a key component for students to excel in the 21C.  We live in a digital visual world.  AMS students will learn the elements and principals of arts, how to create art in traditional and modern methods and how to explore their creative inner spirit.

Working together with AMS Core teachers in an integrated approach, students will learn to apply art concepts to core studies.  We will be working with national exhibit opportunities and look for local community members to foster a strong visual art program.  We will develop an online visual gallery with Artsonia.com to share what the students study and create.

If you are interested in volunteering in the visual art program, please let me know.

I look forward to working with your child in art class and exploring the visual arts educational curriculum with them.

Hello Turtles! We are sending off our first  International Fiber Collaborative exhibition to Texas!
A wonderful area called Big Thicket is home to several species of animals and flowers in several biomes and habitats.
Ms. Mason's 4th grade class picked up their oil pastels and created some of the animals we often see here in Arizona as well.
Here is a group picture of the artwork we are submitting to the exhibition!

Hello Turtles!!
Our Donor's choose bulletin boards have been installed and we are beginning to exhibit artwork on them. While the boards themselves ARE a work of art, the students will have opportunities to see student work on the boards as well.
I encourage you to travel all the hallways in buildings A & B when on campus for an even or upcoming parent teacher conferences!!! While the boards are in specific hallways they art work is school wide for style and association to the background on the student painted bulletin boards. Here they are!

Week of Aug 2 2021

Thank you to all parents who have sent in their $5.00 lab fee to the front office- clearly marked art class lab fee with your child’s name and homeroom!!!

We continue to practice using our P.O.W.E.R. in art class.

This Week ink-2 Art Class we reviewed and used Primary colors. Looked at the Vocabulary Word Wall and created some art with lines and colors.

Third and fourth grade reviewed our service-learning project Kaavan with crosswords and word searches. These tasks help eye and hand coordination for drawing as well as increase vocabulary

Preparations for ARTSONIA.COM are in process. This is the largest online gallery in the world for student artwork. Our students have digital exhibition space at www.artsonia.com under the school's name. Each child has a screen name as well. Parents can upload their child’s artwork directly! Artwork can be made into keepsakes in the gift shop. Each work of art made from the Kaavan service-learning project donates 20% to the Cambodian Wildlife Sanctuary to help Kaavan the elephant.

Please visit our schools web page for art class at:
