Welcome!

Teaching is an absolute passion of mine! I am so excited to work with you and your child! It’s going to be a year full of fun, learning, and lots of adventures. I can’t wait to see what the year has in store for us!
I thought you might like to know a little bit about me. I am a Phoenix transplant from Chicago. Go Cubs! I was born and raised on the west side of Chicago and moved to Phoenix in October of 2017. So far, I love the hot weather, even though no one likes to go outside! I come from a huge family. I have 9 siblings, 7 nephews and 4 nieces. I am number 8 of 10 children. This will be my first year teaching professionally as well as my 1st year teaching 6th grade Composition and Literature AMS-Camelback. It is my mission to instill a love for learning in my students. I attempt to teach with passion for my subject so that my students develop a desire to become life-long learners.

Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. It is so important to keep communication open between us. I would love to talk to you whenever you feel the need! I look forward to a great year together!

Updates/Reminders!

1. New book catalogs were sent home. I will be putting in book orders on January 31

2. Progress Reports will go out February 7 or 8.

3. Due to many of my library books being taken without going through the proper checkout process, I have closed my library for the time being. Students will begin to receive reading logs again next week and will need a book to complete it. Because they are not allowed to check out my books right now, the next best option is to take them to the library and get a library card or purchase books for them. If you decide the library is the way to go, I have good news for you! After getting your child a library card, you can download an app called Libby or visit the library website and checkout books online!

4. Many students have not yet returned their Technology Use Agreement. Failure to return this form will result in the student losing technology privileges throughout AMS. In our ELA class we use Study Island if the student cannot use the Chromebook, they will not be able to receive credit for Study Island Assignments.

5. ATTENDANCE: Arizona State Law states that  if a student misses 10 percent of the school year, we have the right to retain them in their current grade. It can also result in a Class 3 misdemeanor being charged to the parent/guardian. Please send your child to school unless it is an absolute emergency. Vacations do not count as emergencies. For AMS, 10 percent of the school year is 20 days. This 20 days includes excused and unexcused absences.
--------------------------------------------------------------

Each day a middle school class gets 100% participation earns them 5 class points and brings them that much closer to earning their lockers!

2. Students are also finishing up a Storyboard project, they have my permission to work on it at home if possible. Some classes are working with partners and mat need to exchange log in information.
3. Many students expressed interest in doing a Secret Santa Activity. I will be sending permission slips home for any interested student to get their parent's consent for their participation.
4. The end of quarter 2 is approaching and as I am entering new grades I will be messaging some parents about certain students as a form of intervention. Please pay attention to Dojo, as I will most likely message parents there.
5. There is a book fair this week. 6th graders will be allowed to visit the fair on Tuesday and Thursday, 12/4 and 12/6. I am also still accepting book orders as well. Book orders through me are due 12/20.

Lastly, many students are losing their work. Please help your child organize their backpacks. For this reason, I asked each student to get a binder specifically for my classes only.

---------------------------------------------------------------

FYI!

If your child is having a hard time keeping up with Esperanza Rising in class. They can complete the work at home. All read alouds can be found on Youtube. They are posted chapter by chapter. I would advise this for many students.

We are reading Esperanza Rising. Some students have already read this book but they have never analyzed its events and themes. So I am excited to be reading this book with them.
Esperanza Rising is an award-winning work of historical fiction that chronicles the life a Mexican migrant farm worker in the 1930s. In the book's beginning, Esperanza's wealthy father is killed by bandits in Mexico; then, a scheming uncle sets fire to her house and family ranch in order to pressure her widowed mother to marry him. Fleeing to California, Esperanza tries to adjust to the cramped, exhausting life of a farm worker. Thanks to a supportive family and network of friends, she keeps hope alive and begins to work for a new future. Readers will learn a number of Spanish words and about the lives of migrant farm workers during the 1930s as characters deal with strikes, discrimination, harsh living conditions, and more.

I purchased a book recently for the classroom library that has gone missing/or was not properly checked out. The book is titled "Five Nights at Freddy's: The Fourth Closet". Please check if your child has this book. (My book has a colorful stamp in the front cover)
