Homework, Wed 4/8 Formation of the Solar System

This assignment is to watch two videos, and take notes you will be using next week for another project.

The Solar System was formed when a cloud of gas floating in space was compressed, or squeezed together, possibly by the explosion of a star. Remember: Gravity is a force that attracts every object or matter towards other objects or matter. Because things with more mass have a stronger force of gravity, the parts of the cloud that got compressed pulled more gas in towards the center... oooh, sorry. Spoilers. and submit the answers. Do a good job: Next week, you'll be using those answers to do a poster project.

It walks you through building a simple slideshow about yourself. Your assignment next Monday will be to create a Google Slide presentation using the notes from today's videos and some images and ideas I'll supply.)

Objective- Students will identify the source of material that was used in the creation of the Solar System, and be able to explain what ignited the Sun and started that process.
Arizona State Standard 6.E2U1.7 - Use ratios and proportions to analyze and interpret data related to scale, properties, and relationships among objects in our solar system.

How to Submit a Google Docs Answer to a Google Classroom Assignment

This video explains how to use Google Classroom to turn in an assignment using Google Docs, Slides, Sheets, and whatever the 4th one is. While watching this video, you should have your Google Classroom account open so you can follow along. The assignment for 4/5 can be done using Google Classroom or by answering through email. If you're using email, you don't have to watch this video (until you have an account, anyways).

Mon 04 05 Citing references in science writing pdf

You can do today's assignment here unless you're signed up for Google Classroom or can get signed up for it today. If you're not, no big: go through this presentation. It walks you through the steps for giving someone credit for using their work online. At the end, you are told to write 2 "citations" for websites. It says to submit the answers using Google Docs, but if you are *not* signed up yet- and don't worry,  it's still OK if you're not- email your answers to [email protected]. Study Island Quick Review: Strength of Gravity

Surprisingly Short- only about 10 minutes. Your mission, whether or not you decide to accept it, is to complete the Study Island - Strength of Gravity lesson and Practice questions. Gravity is one of the 4 Fundamental Forces that drive and bind the Universe together, and you need to understand it for when we learn about the formation of stars and planets, the Solar System, and galaxies like the Milky Way. This video explains the concepts using the demo built into the activity (https://phet.colorado.edu/sims/html/gravity-force-lab/latest/gravity-force-lab_en.html). Completing the lesson and scoring 70% or higher on the practice questions is how you win: the assignment will count as a score showing your participation this week and your understanding of the topic.

The story continues, as I read wearing the shirt of a wounded security red shirt from Star Trek. I'm trying to do the voices of the characters a little, and there are no murders in this part, but the graveyard residents have a decision to make.

Science 6 G'Day for April 1, 2020

Good morning, Science 6! Today is Wednesday, April 1, 2020. Just a quick note- everything in the news is saying the social distancing and staying at home *is* slowing down how fast the virus is spreading- keep it up! The slower it spreads, the better we can take care of the people who *do* catch it. Today we get into the whole solar system thing. You should have done the Study Island about the Solar System activity by now. Today we're going to start finding out about how the solar system was created in the first place- starting with a little thing called "Gravity." The study Island assignment for today is Strength of Gravity, and you can find it by going to "My Classes" on your Study Island page. I'm pretty sure most of you have already done this for homework, but we need to be solid on this for the next part. Here's the schedule: First, do the Study Island thingie, including practice questions. If you get stuck, or have any questions, I have office hours today and every school day in my Zoom room from 10 am to 12 noon. Come by to say hi and get any questions answered! New lesson on Friday, and remember I'm reading a whole book a little bit at a time, called "The Graveyard Book," and it starts with a triple homicide and a toddler adopted by ghosts. Heck, I'm enjoying it! Lastly, there's a link to a British fitness guy, calls himself "The Body Coach" or something, and he's running a 5 minute workout on YouTube every day for school kids not in school. He does it like in the Britain- Dojo me when you figure out how many hours difference there is between London and Phoenix because of time zones. Science 6 Announcements for Monday, 30 March 2020

Hey, Science 6! I posted this on Dojo yesterday, but reposting it here on general principals.

Things are changing every day. But for right now, we need a game plan. This is the Sci6 game plan for right now.

****If you do *not* have internet access:

You should be picking up packets at the school Mondays between 7.30 and 9.30 am for work due each week, and you can drop off your packet at the same time. (Breakfast/ lunch are also being handed out at the same time for free- come by and pick up a snackle!).
If you have questions about your packet *in any subject* you can reach me on Zoom during office hours (info below) or on Dojo any time. We can also arrange a phone call if that works better for you.

I'm sorry we don't have a better way to teach you right now, but we need to work with what we have. Although the Governor has closed the school buildings, for now Desert Sky Dragons will keep on learning through the scheduled end of the school year! Yay!

Read Aloud- I will be reading a book called "The Graveyard Story" by Neil Gaiman completely, and posting ~15 minute long videos every Tuesday and Thursday on my teacher webpage. A review: "The novel is aimed at 8 – 11 year olds, but the gruesome murder descriptions in the first chapter may push the age up." So you decide if you're interested. :)

Current Events- Once a week, day to be determined, I will post a video about either Sciencey current events or specifically about what the world is about during this whole Coronavirus Kefuffle.

LatinX STEM Hero Project- Once we are set up in Google Classroom, I will post the details. If you have no internet access, it will be an essay like the last one. For those with internet access, we will do it using Google Slides or Google Sites.

Reading a book on video for some reason: The Graveyard Story by Neil Gaiman, pgs 01-20 (Not required)

I will be reading a book here out loud that I've wanted to read for a long time- The Graveyard Story by Neil Gaiman. He's an odd writer- which is why I like his stuff so much. Nothing he writes is the same thing twice- not even his sequels. This is *NOT* an assignment- you can listen or not, read the book on your own, whatever. It's just something I can share with you all during these truly weird times we're living through right now. WARNING: This is not a violent book, but it *does* start with a series of murders described very poetically in passing. And someone hunting a toddler. And ghosts.
