Then, click on classes. Click on my name. Complete the assigned lessons for each day, listed above. Have your child complete any lessons that are "not started" or "in progress." Students can also retry any practice for which they did not earn a blue ribbon (any where they did not score 80% or greater). Sometimes the lesson will scaffold for them and they will be able to earn a silver ribbon with an easier practice then try again with grade level practice.

Winter Behavior Contract Renewal

Restrooms and Water:

Please remind students to use the restroom before school and during recess and lunch. When needed during class, students should use the ASL symbol for restroom and get teacher permission to leave the room. Please remind your child that they should use the restroom or get water then come immediately back to class. We have seen some students wandering or playing outside the classrooms. Please send your child with a personal water bottle labeled with their name. It must be tightly sealed and used appropriately. IT may ONLY contain water. Students may not get water from the fountain or refill water bottles during the lesson (when a teacher is talking), they must wait for lunch, recess, or independent work time when they are on-task and have completed work.

Transitioning Between Rooms:

Yale and NYU Third Grade Scholars have the challenge of quickly transitioning between classrooms, consistently following all rules and expectations, and keeping materials organized. Please remind your child that none of their personal belongings or papers should ever be kept in a desk. Please remind your child that behavior expectations extend to lining up and entering/exiting classrooms.

Toys, items from home, or electronic devices:

The classroom is a serious place for learning. Please check backpacks and keep all materials that are not related to our classroom work at home. If items at school become a distraction, they may be confiscated.

Please discuss the following expectations for conduct with your child.

Schoolwide Rules:

P – Prepare for Learning

A – Act Responsibly

W – Work with Integrity

S – Show Respect

Classroom Rules:

Be Safe

Be Respectful

Be Responsible

Third Grade Essential Agreements:

Please Return

I have reread the rules and expectations. I will follow PAWS expectations at school

Winter Break Homework

A great way to keep skills up during winter break is for your child to complete Study Island. Study Island covers the third grade Arizona standards and includes a lesson, flash cards, and practice.

We do Study Island in class together every Wednesday. We always cover two lessons. However, I have noticed some students are more on task than others with completing lessons. Students are expected to have completed all of the lessons that I have taught so far.

Luckily, Study Island can be done anywhere and it has great features such as reports with comparisons to other students so that you can see how your child is doing.

First, sign into Study Island. Go to https://app.studyisland.com/cfw/login Most students know their username and password by heart now. It is username- studentnumber@az password-studentnumber. For example un- 00000@az p-00000. If they do not know it, please let me know. I can send it to you in a Dojo message.

Then, click on classes. Click on my name.

Some students have far fewer completed than others due to focus in class and the speed at which they complete them. I have included some screenshots of the screens you might want to review with your child. Screenshots 1-13 are from the account of a student who has completed almost all assigned topics. Screenshots 14-19 are from the account of a student who has unfortunately completed very few topics, even though completing these practices is our primary activity every Wednesday. Please review with your child where they are at.

I realize some students will have more time to work on Study Island over winter break and others will have less. This homework is optional over break, but it is a good idea to check in with your child and see if they are completing their practice even if they don't catch up until they get back. Your child should have all assigned practice complete, even if they haven't earned blue ribbons for all topics.

For additional practice, students can also play Dreamscape, a fun game that reinforces reading skills much like Prodigy does for math skills. They have usernames and passwords, I can send your child's to you on Dojo if they have forgotten it. https://play.squigglepark.com/dreamscape/

Finally, please encourage your child to read as much as possible and to talk about what they have read. Ask them to retell the story, to give the main idea and important details of nonfiction text, to tell you the most important part, to tell you what message or theme they noticed in the story, etc.

AZ Merit Essay Practice

I have attached the passage and prompt that your child came home with as well as some writing samples.

Students have come home with a writing prompt that is meant to prepare them for the AZ Merit style district writing test that they will be taking next week. They will need to read two passages and then write a multi-paragraph essay to respond to the prompt using details from both. I realize this is quite a challenge for the students, so I wanted to expose them to the kind of prompt they will see beforehand.

This writing is due Tuesday, but please look at it with them over the weekend if possible. Students who bring it back completed by Tuesday will receive a reward. This writing will also be taken for a grade.

I modeled reading the text and coming up with a topic sentence. They should not write full sentences on the planning sheet aside from the topic sentence and conclusion sentence. They can use just take short notes for the middle.

We will continue progressing with our writing throughout the year, so don't stress, but I want students to at least be prepared for the format that they will see on the test. The writing prompt will look very similar, but with a different set of passages to respond to. Students take the test on Wednesday.

Seeds of Change Trifold.

Students started this trifold today in class. Students had between 30 minutes and an hour to finish while I worked with small groups (depending on how much time they were with me at small group). If your child did not get at least half of it done, they may not have been on task during class. Some students were working on finishing their descriptive writing, but most should have a lot done. I am attaching the document but your child should come home with it.

Assignment

Homework Week of 7/29/19

Read 20 minutes
Log reading on book report form
Complete part of book report form (see below - completed form due Friday)
Practice spelling

Students are expected to log their 20 minutes of reading nightly on the book report form that was sent home. Students will also fill out the book report form over the week (so they should choose a book they can read for at least four nights). There is a fiction and nonfiction book report form. Your child will receive both, so just use the appropriate form. Only one form needs to be turned in per week. Homework on this form will be as follows:

Monday- Front cover, log (1), and characters/facts (2)
Tuesday- Log (1) and (3) setting/text features
Wednesday- Log (1) and vocabulary (4)
Thursday- Log and rate & review (5)

I have completed an example of the homework for you to see(please excuse my lack of artistic skills). I wrote which days they are expected to complete which part at the top. The "evidence"under the character description should have a quote from the book. An example would be writing "adventurous" for Annie and an example quote would be, "'Let's go,' said Annie, 'we can read the facts later.'"

Students should pick a book that takes them longer than one sitting to read (chapter books are great, but longer nonfiction books are also okay). I have books in my classroom library that students may check out [check outs are in the morning (arrival time), in the afternoon (3:08-4:00 when with me), or individually when students are done with work].

Students are also expected to do spelling practice nightly. They may choose from the choice board sent home how to practice their words.
