Thank you everyone for coming out to our ribbon cutting ceremony! We are so excited about this opportunity to recognize our parents and describe to them the future of AMS. The support from the community was tremendous as well with over 60 business, education, and other leaders. Speakers included Tatyana Chayka, CEO of the Academies of Math and Science; Daniel Valenzuela, Vice Mayor of Phoenix; Lisa Graham Keegan, former Arizona Superintendent of Public Instruction and current Executive Director of A for Arizona; Robert Di Bacco, Chief Operating Officer of the Arizona Charter Schools Association; Bernardo Marin, parent representative; and Isai Torres Castro, student representative. In addition to these speakers, Senator Sherwood was present to support us and participated in cutting the school ribbon. Our students proudly performed the National Anthem and “Lean on Me”, and two students, Joseph Robinson and Frank Muños, did a superb job as soloists.
During his remarks, Isai praised AMS for helping him reach his goals: “I want to go to Metro Tech High School, which is a school that expects good grades and high test scores. I know that The Academy of Math and Science is preparing me to achieve my goal of attending Metro Tech High School by teaching me what I need to know and helping me improve in subjects I am already good at.”
When Mr. Bernardo Marin was asked “Why AMS?” his response got to the heart of what parents in the neighborhood want: “I…found that AMS Camelback had high academic levels, great discipline, courses in English as a second language, courses in foreign languages…, zero tolerance for bullying, and our children [are kept safe].
AMS’s focus on bringing a well-rounded college-preparatory program into underperforming areas and our excellent results in doing so makes us unique. We will continue to strive to be the very best in every neighborhood we serve. Our kids and parents deserve that. Our level of effort and care is exactly why Lisa Graham Keegan declared that, “AMS is in the top of its class.”
